What this solves — and what it doesn't
Tent manufacturers rate a “3-person” tent by squeezing three sleeping pads onto the floor and ignoring that people need to store packs, boots, and clothing somewhere dry. In practice, a 3-person tent is genuinely comfortable for two adults with gear — and a torture test for three adults in shoulder season. This calculator converts the spec-sheet number into a realistic occupant count using floor area, gear storage needs, season (you wear more layers, want more ventilation room), and body size.
How to read the result
We compute three numbers:
- Realistic capacity — how many adults can sleep comfortably with internal gear storage.
- Cozy capacity — how many can fit if everyone is friendly with close quarters.
- Storage-only capacity — how many could sleep if all gear lived in the vestibule.
If “realistic” is two fewer than the manufacturer number, that’s normal — most spec sheets assume summer, no gear, and small humans.
Limitations
- Doesn’t model tent geometry. A 4 m² rectangular floor and a 4 m² semicircular floor feel very different.
- No vestibule consideration. A tent with a 1.5 m² vestibule can store a lot of gear outside the sleeping area.
- Comfort is subjective. Some sleep fine in tight spaces; others need a foot of clearance.
Frequently asked questions
Does peak height matter?
Yes, but it’s about sitting up rather than sleeping. Two tents with the same floor area but different peaks can have the same sleeping capacity; the higher one lets you change clothes without crawling.
What about kid + parent combos?
Use the Slim body size for kids. A 175 cm parent and a 110 cm child fit easily into a 2-person tent for overnight trips; for longer, give yourself a 3-person tent.
Does a dog count as a person?
Sort of. A 25 kg dog at your feet adds ~0.5 person equivalent in space and 0.3 person in warmth. Account for it if you’re cramped.
